Stuck in my head.

I really hate it when a song gets stuck in my head.  It’s even worse when it’s a commercial jingle.  I have Subway’s $5 foot-long ad repeating over and over in my head.  And the only other song I can bring to mind is one I can’t stand (it’s Steely Dan), so maybe I’ll just give up and try to ignore Subway.

Ignoring it is not working.  I’ve been sitting here, trying to start another sentence, and all I can think is “Five.  Five dollar.  Five-dollar foot-long,” with the horrible guitar riff from “Reeling in the Years” in the background.  I can’t believe I made it worse.

That reminds me, though, of a coincidence today.  This morning I had three words from a song I couldn’t name stuck in my head (“night life baby”) along with the hook.  And I kept trying to fit the words “cat scratch fever” in instead of “night life baby”, even though I knew the song wasn’t “Cat Scratch Fever.”  Very different song.  Anyway, I got distracted and forgot about it.  I got into the car and turned the radio on just in time to hear “night life baby” followed by that hook!  It’s “Let’s Go” by the Cars.  So that’s a little weird.  And now I’m hearing that song sort of combined with “Let’s Go Crazy” by Prince.  At least I got rid of the other two.  This is an improvement.  And I’ve decided I really like the Cars.  Or at least their hits.  I know more of their songs than I realized.

It’s amusing to me that you use all these words about music in your posts that mean absolutely zero to me…like hook and riff. I also have never heard of any of these songs (except the Subway one – I totally agree, it’s annoying!)

Sounds like you guys had a nice brunch over the weekend!

Also, I just read this quote from Stephen King that I think you might agree with…I know I did 🙂

“Both Rowling and Meyer, they’re speaking directly to young people. … The real difference is that [Harry Potter author] Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and [Twilight author] Stephenie Meyer can’t write worth a darn. She’s not very good.”

    Brunch was very nice.

The hook of a song is the part that gets to you, the part that makes the song instantly recognizable, even if that’s the only part of it you heard. A riff – John, if you ever read this, can you describe what a riff is?

Of course, you don’t really care, do you? 🙂

I’ve had Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours” stuck in my head all week, but it hasn’t gotten on my nerves yet because it’s a cheerful song and makes me happy.

I’ve been deliberately avoiding that song, so I haven’t really heard it yet. His first two hits got overplayed quickly and started to drive me crazy. I can’t listen to them anymore because they WILL get stuck in my head. I’m afraid of the same thing happening with the new song. That is the new one, right?

I think it’s new…I’m not really sure. I’d never heard of him until I happen to hear this song one day. I’m usually a little behind the curve on the music scene.

His first hit (“Remedy” or “The Remedy” or something – very catchy) was playing constantly when I was SWOS. I remember hearing it on our drive back to Newport from John’s parents’ house in CT on the 4th of July. That was 2001. The second one (“Words” or something like that) was big sometime while we were living in Portsmouth. 2003 or 2004, maybe. I thought he dropped off the planet.

Now that we have Sirius in the car, I rarely hear new music. I should probably try harder, but there are so many other things to do!

Corey should probably weigh in here, but he says he can’t get signed in. (Z, you might want to help him.) Hanging out with a 3-year-old who watches Dora the Explorer as much as the adults around her will allow is a terrible thing for getting songs stuck in your head. Right now it’s “I’m the map, I’m the map, I’m the map, I’m the map……” endlessly spooling through my head. I dare you to listen to it!
