My goodness, grad school is expensive

Yeah, I know.  Not news.  But still, I need to look into this more.  And I don’t mean that in an investigative reporting/blow off the lid of this thing way.  Though maybe I should.  I just looked at online masters programs with costs of almost $1000 per credit hour.  How ridiculous is that?  Hang on, I just did the math for undergrad.  Hmm.  All told, it cost almost $850 a credit hour for me at GW.  The skyrocketing tuition hikes since I left put the cost per credit hour (assuming 18 credits a semester) at almost $1400 now.  Unbelievable.  So maybe grad school is a steal.  It’s just now I have to pay for it.  Well, that’s depressing math.

On that note, I’m going to bed.

It will, but that benefit comes with the standard rules about reimbursing them if I leave the company within a certain amount of time, and since that’s a possibility for me (pretty likely, actually), I need to make sure I can afford the whole thing before I commit to it.

The best deal with grad school is that you get a fellowship or a teaching assistance-ship (?). Then tuition is rebated (you don’t pay it at all), you teach a couple of classes, and you get a stipend. For example, at UL right now (I just happened to see this the other day), psychology grad students are teaching assistants with a stipend of $22,000/year plus benefits. It depends on the field you’re in and how many teaching assistants they need to teach freshman level courses. English, math, psychology…all the fields that have geeneral education requirements for undergraduates. I never paid a dime of tuition for graduate school.

But that assumes I’m in school full-time, right? Or at least not working full-time. I was making the assumption that I’d be working and going to school at night. Because we need MONEY.

  4. I hear you. It’s freakin’ ridiculous! One of the reasons I moved back to MI for grad school where it’s only like $650/credit hr instead of staying in the west where the schools were $1000+/credit hr.

And I’m not allowed to work during my program- all on loans… 🙁 What are you thinking about going back for?

Well, that’s why they give you the stipend. No, it’s not what you’re making now, but subtract the cost of tuition from your salary and the extra time it will take to get finished and on to something else you want to do.

Suz – I’m not really sure. Possibly library science, possibly math (with maybe an eye towards teaching math in higher ed). Still thinking about it.
