My not very well thought out review of The Hunger Games

I finished The Hunger Games trilogy over the weekend.  After one small hiccup at the very beginning, I couldn’t put them down.  The hiccup?  It’s written in the first person point of view, but in the present tense.  I nearly gave up on the first page.  But I got over it almost immediately and stopped noticing.  Stopped noticing to the point where I’m not 100% sure the second and third books are written the same way.  They must be.  I could check, but they’re in the other room.  I’m lazy.  Anyway, aside from that, I was hooked right away.  Dystopian society in the not-too-distant future, people pushed to the edge, hard choices, fight for survival – good stuff.

  1. Huh. I wondered about this series, but I got scared away from it. Maybe I’ll try it after all.

Just returned from the library with “Death Comes to Pemberley” in hand! Have you read it yet?

That’s PD James, right? I haven’t read that one. And…I just checked the shelves. I don’t have it. Let me know if it’s good!

What scared you away from The Hunger Games?

This is PD James’ latest book and she sets it just post-Pride and Prejudice, setting a murder at the Darcy’s home.

Ok, you made me read it (Hunger Games), and I read all but about 10% (according to my Kindle which keeps track of where you are in odd ways) in one sitting…or lying. I was in bed and stayed up way too late. My first thought was that the author had ripped off Shirley Jackson’s short story “The Lottery,” and she did for the basic premise. But I got beyond that and got hooked. Thinking about starting the second one.

Just downloaded it so I’ll let you know what I think of it when I apparently will be finishing it later today. Btw: i wrote one of my best short stories in first person present tense. It’s a stream-of-consciousness technique that compels the reader to forget about their own thoughts while reading. Ooooh.

Finished it. And during the Superbowl, no less. Not bad, but gotta say I got a little peeved when I recognized the preview for the movie right before the game started WITH THE TV ON MUTE and I was only about halfway through the book at that point. Le sigh. But maybe that means the movie will be pretty close to the book. Oh, and btw, very pomo. Just saying.
