The Raven Tower by Ann Leckie

This book marks the first time I’ve been disappointed by an Ann Leckie book.  The style is different, but interesting-different, not off-putting, so that was fine, but I finished this book over a month ago and I cannot remember the ending.  I remember the reveal, but I don’t know what happens to the characters.  So…I suppose that’s saying something about how I feel about this book.

Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

I gave up on this one, but not through any fault of its own.  I just wasn’t in the mood. It’s set in early 20th century Mexico, and maybe it’s fantasy and maybe it’s magical realism (which I generally do NOT like), but there are gods and bargains and LOTS of discussions of towns and their histories, and yeah.  Not in the mood.  It has really good reviews, so I feel bad about giving up, but not that bad.

YA, possibly Lovecraftian (at least insofar as it includes monsters in the ocean deeps), with an Artful Dodger-like main character, but it didn’t grab me.  It seems perfectly readable, and maybe I’ll go back to it, but I have a limited amount of time to read Hugo-nominated books, and I don’t want to spend time on this one.

Empire of Sand by Tasha Suri

First in a series about magic based on Indian culture, set in a desert country with gods and spirits and power-hungry emperor-priests.  Really good.  I think the sequel follows a different character, and I’m a little bummed about that.

The Unkindness of Ravens by Abra Staffin-Wiebe

A good novella, interesting magic. The story is the member-of-nobility-hides-with-the-common-people-and-learns-a-lesson type, but it’s done well.

The Black God’s Drums by P. Djèlí Clark

Steampunk fantasy novella set in post-Civil War New Orleans.  I’m not always a fan of stories that use gods to fuel the magic system (capricious gods that act like children annoy me), but I liked it this time.  Details built an alternate New Orleans without a lot of exposition, and the characters were well done.

Three Parts Dead by Max Gladstone

This is the first book in the Craft Sequence.  I wanted to like it, but I couldn’t get into the story.  I didn’t find the characters particularly interesting, and the pacing was odd, so I wasn’t feeling involved.  I gave up after a couple of days of avoidance.

It was interesting and not at all what I expected and I LIKED it but I didn’t love it. A kid and a teenager and a demigod and some sentient robots in South Africa.
